Review by Nathan Wirth
There really isn't much that can be said about this book. I am not entirely sure what its purpose actually is, but Kelly is sure to note, perhaps wisely, that he intentionally wishes to avoid any interpretations of Van Morrison the man; rather, he attempts to look at the "characters," "themes," and "places" found in Morrison's songs. While Kelly is trying very hard to present an intelligent interpretation of these elements, he instead comes across as a sophomoric idealist over-zealously preoccupied with mysticism and God-- which some might claim Morrison is guilty of. Most of Kelly's insights are, unfortunately, trite and hardly worthy of being published, coming across as a poorly written thesis for college. I would only recommend this book to collectors.
