Review by Linda Tuttle
[The songwriters covered in this book include] Joni Mitchell / Randy Newman / Bob Dylan / Van Morrison / Laura Nyro/ Don McLean / Robert Hunter and many others. There is a chapter on Van titled "Belfast Cowboy" in which the author writes of seeing Van perform on various occasions and also reviews his albums up to Saint Dominic's Preview:
"The first hints of what Morrison was to release on Warner Brothers came in a short tour of rock clubs and colleges he undertook in 1969. I heard Morrison for the first time during this tour, when he was performing songs mostly from his forthcoming album. The tunes were loose, long songpoems, sung with wistfullness and strength over a constant and lovely rhythmic background. Morrison would set up a riff on his guitar and the bass player would join in, and then - a few lines, a chorus and - magic, the kind of musical magic that happens so rarely that you close your eyes, open your ears and savor it when it comes. Each line and each chorus revealed a new and totally unique Van Morrison, a man singing love songs to childhood and his lovers, singing with grace and lilting Irish force."
I think he likes him . . . It is an interesting chapter - and an interesting book
