The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz has an entry on 52nd Street:

52nd Street in New York was the center of jazz performance in the city for about a decade from the mid-30s; many of the most famous nightclubs of the period were situated on the block between Fifth and Sixth avenues, including the Onyx, the Famous Door, the Three Deuces, Jimmy Ryan's, the Spotlite, and Kelly's Stable.
