The Sunday night finale of Van's NYC run was not about generating excitement, or clamor, or audience reaction, it was about the pursuit of beauty and how the arc of a voice can come close to conveying emotional perfection.
As viscerally exciting as Saturday's show was, Sunday's was about creating a work of art in some of the most beautiful singing and phrasing I have ever heard from Van. It was an expression of heart and soul. It's really as simple as that.
